ada standards for accessible design

Doors in series shall swing either in the same direction or away from the space between the doors. The minimum space between two hinged or pivoted doors in series shall be 48 in (1220 mm) plus the width of any door swinging into the space. Doors in series shall swing either in the same direction or away from the space between the doors (see Fig. 26).

Chapter 7: Communication Elements and Features

ada standards for accessible design

The full text of the 2010 Standards is available for public review on the ADA Home Page and on the Access Board’s Web site (last visited June 24, 2010). The Access Board site also includes an extensive discussion of the development of the 2004 ADA/ABA Guidelines, and a detailed comparison of the 1991 Standards, the ADA/ABA Guidelines, and the 2003 International Building Code. The Department has assembled an official online version of the 2010 Standards to bring together the information in one easy-to-access location. It provides the scoping and technical requirements for new construction and alterations resulting from the adoption of revised 2010 Standards in the final rules for Title II (28 CFR part 35) and Title III (28 CFR part 36).

Knee and Toe Clearance

One commenter stated that, in its view, the residential facilities standards were congruent with overlapping requirements from HUD, and that access provided by the residential facilities requirements within alterations would ensure dispersion of accessible features more effectively. This commenter also argued that while the increased number of required accessible units for residential facilities as compared to transient lodging may increase the cost of construction or alteration, this cost would be offset by a reduced need to adapt rooms later if the demand for accessible rooms exceeds the supply. The commenter also encouraged the Department to impose a visitability (accessible doorways and necessary clear floor space for turning radius) requirement for both the residential facilities and transient lodging requirements to allow students with mobilityimpairments to interact and socialize in a fully integrated fashion. The ADA does not exempt spaces because of a belief or policy that excludes persons with disabilities from certain work.

State and Local Accessibility Regulations

Paragraph (b)(2) lists examples of aids and services for making visually delivered materials accessible to persons with visual impairments. Many commenters proposed additional examples such as signage or mapping, audio description services, secondary auditory programs (SAP), telebraillers, and reading machines. While the Department declines to add these items to the list in the regulation, they may be considered appropriate auxiliary aids and services.

A4.2 Space Allowances and Reach Ranges

Where glazed openings are provided in accessible rooms or spaces for operation by occupants, at least one opening shall comply with 309. Each glazed opening required by an administrative authority to be operable shall comply with 309. Dining surfaces and work surfaces required to comply with 902 shall be dispersed throughout the space or facility containing dining surfaces and work surfaces.

The Department is persuaded by the concerns raised by commenters for both the title II and III regulations that the six-month compliance date proposed in the NPRM for application of the Standards may be too short for certain projects that are already in the midst of the design and permitting process. The Department has determined that for new construction and alterations, compliance with the 2010 Standards will not be required until 18 months from the date the final rule is published. Until the time compliance with the 2010 Standards is required, public entities will have the option of complying with the 2010 Standards, the UFAS, or the Standards. However, public entities that choose to comply with the Standards in lieu of the 1991 Standards or UFAS prior to the compliance date described in this rule must choose one of the three standards, and may not rely on some of the requirements contained in one standard and some of the requirements contained in the other standards.

The incremental scoping for wheelchair spaces and companion seats required in assembly areas with fixed seating has been reduced. Under the 1991 Standards, incremental scoping for assembly facilities with more than 500 seats was one additional wheelchair space and companion seat for each increase of 100 seats. Under the 2010 Standards, facilities with 501 to 5000 seats must provide one additional wheelchair space for each additional 150 seats (or fraction thereof) and facilities with more than 5001 seats must one additional space for each 200 seats over 5001. Some provisions in the ADA Standards specify a minimum number of elements or spaces as a minimum percentage or proportion.

7 Curb Ramps

A minimum 132 inch (3350 mm) wide vehicle space is shown with a minimum 60 inch (1525 mm) marked access aisle. Two minimum 132 inch wide (2440 mm) vehicle spaces sharing a 60 inch (1525 mm) minimum width access aisle take up a minimum of 324 inches (8225 mm). People who have difficulty walking or maintaining balance or who use crutches, canes, or walkers, and those with restricted gaits are particularly sensitive to slipping and tripping hazards. For such people, a stable and regular surface is necessary for safe walking, particularly on stairs.

Medical Care and Long-Term Care Facilities

A turning space complying with 304.2 and 304.3 shall be provided in load and unload areas. Where installed in wet locations, the surface of the seat shall be slip resistant and shall not accumulate water. At least 50 percent of shelf space in storage facilities shall comply with 811.

Some commenters noted that persons with disabilities may be required to travel long distances when the locations for examinations for individuals with disabilities are limited, for example, to only one city in a State instead of a variety of cities. The Department has therefore revised this paragraph to add a requirement that such examinations be offered at locations that are as convenient as the location of other examinations. In the final rule, Sec.36.305(c) provides specific requirements regarding alternatives to barrier removal in multiscreen cinemas. In some situations, it may not be readily achievable to remove enough barriers to provide access to all of the theaters of a multiscreen cinema. If that is the case, Sec.36.305(c) requires the cinema to establish a film rotation schedule that provides reasonable access for individuals who use wheelchairs to films being presented by the cinema.

A critical determination is what constitutes an effective auxiliary aid or service. The Department’s proposed rule recommended that, in determining what auxiliary aid to use, the public accommodation consult with an individual before providing him or her with a particular auxiliary aid or service. Many persons with disabilities, particularly persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, recommended that the rule should require that public accommodations give "primary consideration’’ to the "expressed choice’’ of an individual with a disability.

No, latch clearance 12″ minimum is required for forward approaches onthe push-side of doors equipped with both a closer and a latch. If adoor has a closer but no latch, or a latch and no closer, no additionallatch side clearance is required (although providing the clearance ishelpful in maneuvering through doors with closers without latches). Thisis also true for the additional depth required for hinge approaches onthe push side when both a closer and latch is provided.

Applying the general requirements for alterations to housing can result in partially accessible dwelling units where single elements or spaces in dwelling units are altered. The 1991 Standards require areas of rescue assistance or horizontal exits in facilities with levels above or below the level of exit discharge. Areas of rescue assistance are spaces that have direct access to an exit, stair, or enclosure where individuals who are unable to use stairs can go to call for assistance and wait for evacuation. The 2010 Standards incorporate the requirements established by the IBC.

Many dimensions in the ADA Standards are expressed as a range instead ofan absolute so that designers can allow some room for minor deviationsin construction or manufacturing. For title III of the ADA, the 2010 Standards consist of both theregulatory provisions in 28 CFR part 36, subpart D, and appropriatesections of the Access Board’s 2004 ADA Accessibility Guidelines (36 CFRpart 1191, appendices B and D). As implemented under title II, the 2010 Standards consist of theregulatory provisions in 28 CFR §35.151 and appropriate sections of theAccess Board’s 2004 ADA Accessibility Guidelines (36 CFR part 1191,appendices B and D). The clear width is measured from the stop to the face ofdoors or gates open 90⁰ (or to the leading edge of sliding or foldingdoors. No projection into the clear width is permitted below 34″. New provisions of the Standards at sections 230.1 and 708 require two-way communications systems to be equipped with visible as well as audible signals.

It is noted, however, that the existence of this language in the advisory does not require a place of transient lodging that does not offer smoking guest rooms at its facility to do so only for individuals with disabilities. Section 707 of the Standards adds specific technical requirements for speech output, privacy, tactilely-discernible input controls, display screens, and Braille instructions to the general accessibility requirements set out in the 1991 Standards. Machines shall be speech enabled and exceptions are provided that cover when audible tones are permitted, when advertisements or similar information are provided, and where speech synthesis cannot be supported. The 1991 Standards require these machines to be accessible to and independently usable by persons with visual impairments, but do not contain any technical specifications.

Shelves shall be located 40 inches (1015 mm) minimum and 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum above the finish floor. The purpose of requiring the drinking fountain spout to produce a flow of water 4 inches (100 mm) high minimum is so that a cup can be inserted under the flow of water to provide a drink of water for an individual who, because of a disability, would otherwise be incapable of using the drinking fountain. The spout shall be located 15 inches (380 mm) minimum from the vertical support and 5 inches (125 mm) maximum from the front edge of the unit, including bumpers.

Lastly, consulting a reputable realtor or real estate agent in your area is also a good option. A realtor can help assess the fair market value of your property in its current condition, and provide a reliable estimate of the annual appreciate rate in your suburb. Furthermore, you are also able to offset the amount of tax you pay with rental property specifically, if you exercise your right to deduct depreciation as an expense.

He has dedicated his career to providing cutting-edge education and resources for real estate professionals. He emphasizes the importance of self-taught knowledge through mentors, books, and hands-on experience. The amount you can expect your home to appreciate depends on the above-mentioned factors and countless other micro- and macroeconomic indicators. In fact, the factors impacting home appreciation are so numerous and volatile that it’s unsafe for anyone to expect their home to appreciate.

Determine The Holding Period

Average home appreciation rates are the rates at which homes increase in value for a given period of time. These rates will vary over time, but typically, they do not shoot up drastically. She’s considering buying a property for $300,000 in a neighborhood where homes have historically appreciated at a rate of 4% per year. Using a Home Appreciation Calculator, she finds that the property could be worth around $438,225 in 10 years.

Factors Influencing Home Appreciation

The typical down ranges between 5% to 20% of a home’s value, although you can put more, and in some cases, less. Purchase price refers to the price that you initially purchased your home for. This includes your down payment, plus the remaining amount that you might have financed through a lender. Is the house that you are looking to buy fit into the overall neighborhood? Does it have a special design or does it look similar to all the other houses on the block?

Home equity is the difference between what you owe on your mortgage and what your home is worth. It represents the dollar amount of your home that you actually own, and this money can be accessed and withdrawn through various loans and refinances should you ever need quick cash. Adding square footage is not the easiest way to add value to a home, but adding structures like a deck or a guest house will almost always add thousands of dollars in value to your home. The best way of doing this is by investing in your home and making improvements. Workout the potential profitability of an investment property with our Rental Property Calculator.

Using previous appreciation trends, appreciation calculators can make educated guesses about the value of your home. The median home value in the United States has experienced historic appreciation in as little as a few years. Since the pandemic shaped the current real estate market the median home value across the country has increased 2.6% year-over-year to $342,685, according to Zillow. There are several myths about home appreciation that can lead homeowners and investors astray. While homes generally appreciate over time, this isn’t always the case.

You might notice that adjusting the down payment percentage results in a different ROI percentage at the bottom of the tool. This calculator uses the “out-of-pocket method,” which is the preferred method of real estate investors. When you use this method, only your out-of-pocket expenses are considered when calculating your initial investment amount. The home appreciation rate varies from state to state, and city to city.

Most often, down payments are calculated as a percentage of the purchase price of the home. Home Appreciation Calculator to estimate how much your house will be worth in the future. The House appreciation calculator uses the current home value and yearly appreciation rate to estimate the future house value. Ultimately it doesn’t make sense to use the simple interest formula for home appreciation. Doing so ignores the fact that the property has increased in value over the time period (assuming the interest rate is positive).

Simply enter the current value of the property, the home appreciation rate, and the number of years into the tool below. For example, let’s say your home was valued at $200,000 when you purchased it and that market value has increased to $225,000. This is a value increase of $25,000 but calculating the rate of appreciation requires a few more steps. Because the trend for homes in the United States is currently about 3-5% in appreciation, this means that most homeowners will see their home’s value increase in the long run. However, to maximize home appreciation, homeowners need to do their part. Once you’ve entered all the necessary information, click on the “Calculate” button to generate your results.

Of course, you don’t have to just sit back and passively hope for your home’s value to increase. You can actively help things along by undertaking home improvement projects that add value. By investing in projects that can increase your potential sale price, you can maximize your home’s appreciation.

The sensitive and responsive buttons facilitate quick and accurate data entry, reducing the likelihood of errors during calculations. Its sleek blue color adds a touch of modernity to your workspace, making it a stylish addition to any desk. Armed with these 3 pieces of information, you can work out the expected value of your home in 10 years. You simply need to enter these details into the home appreciation formula (see example further up the article) or use a home appreciation calculator. Looking for factors you can control that will increase a home’s value? Home improvements, upgrades and renovations are the most surefire way to encourage home appreciation.

Home appreciation is the rate at which the value of your home increases over time. It’s influenced by a variety of factors, from the condition of your home to the state of the real estate market. The great thing about home appreciation is that it can turn your home into a powerful investment tool, helping you build wealth over the long term.

A Simple Guide to Using the ADA Standards for Accessible Design Guidelines

ada standards for accessible design

In some situations, an effective alternative to use of a notepad or an interpreter may be the use of a computer terminal upon which the representative of the public accommodation and the customer or client can exchange typewritten messages. The inclusion of this provision is not intended to imply that persons with disabilities pose risks to others. It establishes a strict standard that must be met before denying service to an individual with a disability or excluding that individual from participation. A public accommodation may not exclude persons with disabilities on the basis of disability for reasons other than those specifically set forth in this part.

Miniature Golf Facilities

Some commenters argued that chain establishments need additional time to redesign their “master facility” designs for replication at multiple locations, taking into account both the new standards and applicable State and local accessibility requirements. The purpose of the proposed six-month delay in requiring compliance with the 2010 Standards was to allow covered entities a reasonable grace period to transition between the existing and the proposed standards. For that reason, if a title II entity preferred to use the 2010 Standards as the standard for new construction or alterations commenced within the six-month period after the effective date of the final rule, such entity would be considered in compliance with title II of the ADA. One commenter proposed that a previous record of barrier removal be one of the factors in determining, prospectively, what renders a facility, when viewed in its entirety, usable and accessible to persons with disabilities. Another commenter asked the Department to clarify, at a minimum, that to the extent compliance with the Standards does not provide program access, particularly with regard to areas not specifically addressed in the 1991 Standards, the safe harbor will not operate to relieve an entity of its obligations to provide program access. Exercise machines and equipment shall have a clear floor space complying with 305 positioned for transfer or for use by an individual seated in a wheelchair.

Chapter 2: Scoping Requirements

As explained in paragraph (3) of the rule’s definition of disability, this includes a person who has a history of an impairment that substantially limited a major life activity, such as someone who has recovered from an impairment. It also includes persons who have been misclassified as having an impairment. In sum, the determination as to whether allergies to cigarette smoke, or allergies or sensitivities characterized by the commenters as environmental illness are disabilities covered by the regulation must be made using the same case-by-case analysis that is applied to all other physical or mental impairments.

The ADA Standards apply to new construction, alterations, and additions. While the scoping and technical requirements for new construction alsoapply to alterations and additions, provisions and exceptions specificto alterations or additions are provided throughout the document. Both DOJ’s and DOT’s ADA Standards are based on minimum accessibilityguidelines adopted by the Access Board in 2004, known as the ADAAccessibility Guidelines. As a result, these two sets of standards arevery similar for the most part. However, each contains additionalrequirements that are specific to the facilities covered by therespective agencies. The Standards require that primary entrances to dwelling units beaccessible.

B. Public Facilities:

If a facility subject to the elevator exemption set forth in paragraph (i) nonetheless has a full passenger elevator, that elevator shall meet, to the maximum extent feasible, the accessibility requirements of these guidelines. Special application sections 5 through 10 provide additional requirements for restaurants and cafeterias, medical care facilities, business and mercantile, libraries, accessible transient lodging, and transportation facilities. When a building or facility contains more than one use covered by a special application section, each portion shall comply with the requirements for that use. A continuous unobstructed path connecting all accessible elements and spaces of a building or facility. Interior accessible routes may include corridors, floors, ramps, elevators, lifts, and clear floor space at fixtures. Exterior accessible routes may include parking access aisles, curb ramps, crosswalks at vehicular ways, walks, ramps, and lifts.

Shows a person using a wheelchair positioned to one side of a toilet. The back of the wheelchair is facing the wall that is behind the toilet. The centerline toilet is shown as 18 inches (455 mm) from the closest side wall. The edge of the clear floor space on the opposite side of the toilet is shown as 42 inches (1065 mm) from the edge of the clear floor space to the centerline of the toilet. Three illustrations show the transfer from the wheelchair to the toilet. In (1), the user takes the transfer position adjacent to the toilet, removes the armrest closest to the toilet and sets brakes.

The Act requires the Attorney General to determine at what point the cost of providing an accessible path of travel becomes disproportionate. The proposed rule provided three options for making this determination. For purposes of this subpart, the rule does not distinguish between a "shopping mall’’ (usually a building with a roofed-over common pedestrian area serving more than one tenant in which a majority of the tenants have a main entrance from the common pedestrian area) and a "shopping center’’ (e.g., a "shopping strip’’).

Floor or Ground Surfaces

This will permit a person to call the pool lift when the pool lift is in the opposite position. It is extremely important for a person who is swimming alone to be able to call the pool lift when it is in the up position so he or she will not be stranded in the water for extended periods of time awaiting assistance. The requirement for a pool lift to be independently operable does not preclude assistance from being provided.

Law, Regulations & Standards

ada standards for accessible design

In the same vein, some Option One supporters found Option Two objectionable on due process grounds. In their view, Option Two would mean that in July 1991 (upon issuance of the final DOJ rule) the responsible entities would learn that ADA standards had been in effect since July 26, 1990, and this would amount to retroactive application of standards. Numerous commenters characterized Option Two as having no support in the statute and Option One as being more consistent with congressional intent. Paragraph 36.401(a)(1) restates the general requirement for accessible new construction. In response, the Department has revised this paragraph to repeat the language of section 303(a) of the ADA. The Department will interpret this section in a manner consistent with the intent of the statute and with the nature of the responsibilities of the various entities for design, for construction, or for both.

ada standards for accessible design

(i) An accessible entrance; (ii) An accessible route to the altered area; (iii) At least one accessible restroom for each sex or a single unisex restroom; (iv) Accessible telephones; (v) Accessible drinking fountains; and (vi) When possible, additional accessible elements such as parking, storage, and alarms. (1) A "path of travel" includes a continuous, unobstructed way of pedestrian passage by means of which the altered area may be approached, entered, and exited, and which connects the altered area with an exterior approach (including sidewalks, streets, and parking areas), an entrance to the facility, and other parts of the facility. (1) An accessible entrance; (2) An accessible route to the altered area; (3) At least one accessible restroom for each sex or a single unisex restroom; (4) Accessible telephones; (5) Accessible drinking fountains; and (6) When possible, additional accessible elements such as parking, storage, and alarms.

The 2010 Standards extend this requirement to mechanical access parking garages. The 1991 Standards contained an exception that exempted valet parking facilities from providing accessible parking spaces. The reason for not retaining the provision is that valet parking is a service, not a facility type. Commenters stated that the first exception, by allowing a small parking lot with four or fewer spaces not to post a sign at its one accessible space, is problematic because it could allow all drivers to park in accessible parking spaces.

Accessible routes shall coincide with or be located in the same area as general circulation paths. Where circulation paths are interior, required accessible routes shall also be interior. Modular furniture that is not permanently installed is not directly subject to these requirements. The Department of Justice ADA regulations provide additional guidance regarding the relationship between these requirements and elements that are not part of the built environment. Additionally, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) implements title I of the ADA which requires non-discrimination in the workplace. EEOC can provide guidance regarding employers’ obligations to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities.

The 10 Best Mississippi River Cities and Destinations

We embrace the relaxed pace of life on the River, following its bends and savoring its charms in much the same way as travelers and colonists would have over a century before. Travel to the birthplace of jazz, blues, and rock–n-roll as our talented onboard musicians entertain you with songs born along the river. Dine on the finest Cajun and Creole and mouth-watering Memphis BBQ prepared by our team of master chefs. Enjoy a complimentary cocktail hour every evening, a time when you can share the day’s adventures with like-minded travelers, while enjoying a refreshing mint julip. From New Orleans, LA to St. Paul, MN, enjoy well-customized excursions, led by engaging local guides who live and work in these great port cities of America’s Heartland.

Explore St. Paul’s historic districts graced with late 19th- and early 20th-century mansions. Sail along the Mississippi River, an important region with diverse wildlife and ecosystems. Immerse yourself in the blues with Viking’s Privileged Access Mississippi Delta experience. Explore the oldest city on the Mississippi, Natchez, with over 200 historic Southern estates. Experience New Orleans, famed for the old-world architecture of its iconic French Quarter. Step into 19th-century America in Winona, Minnesota, located in the picturesque bluff country on the Mississippi River.

You can cruise all the way from New Orleans to Minneapolis, or you can sail shorter segments of the river. Typically, cruises along the Lower Mississippi sail between New Orleans and Memphis, while cruises on the Upper Mississippi sail between St. Louis and the Twin Cities. Here's what you need to know about Mississippi River boat cruises, from choice itineraries to popular stops.

Being the fourth largest river in the USA means that a river cruise in Mississippi will reveal countless landmarks, breathtaking scenery and even wildlife. Discover premium river cruise companies and you've got yourself a dream holiday to relax and recharge. The comfort of your ship awaits at the nearby Beale Street Landing, docked along an impressive, recently renovated city park. As the bow-ramp from the ship opens and stretches to the shore, you will be welcomed into the historic cotton port of St. Francisville. Overlooking the river from atop a high, St. Francisville began as a part of Spanish West Florida in the early 1800s until American settlers overthrew the Spanish governing forces, and the region later became part of the United States.

Be Wary of Weather on the Mississippi River Changing Your Cruise Itinerary

Get a backstage pass to Elvis’ Graceland and the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis. Explore the boyhood town of Mark Twain in Hannibal and be treated to a live show at the Grand Old Opry in Nashville. As you cruise toward the vibrant city of Memphis, enjoy the beauty of the heart and the soul of the Mississippi Delta.

Ask about our Current Savings and our Pre-Cruise Packages which include a premium hotel stay and transportation to the ship. For instance, Viking's excursions on a Mississippi sailing may include boat tours of the Manchac Swamp and a cooking demonstration at Houmas House in Darrow, Louisiana. Keep in mind that sailing against the current slows the boat and generally means fewer ports or less time in port, but you'll have more time to relax onboard. Viking River Cruises' 22-day Grand Mississippi Voyage, available in 2024 aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi, also embarks in New Orleans and visits 16 ports in nine states as it cruises north to St. Paul, Minnesota. On American Cruise Lines' eight-day New Orleans to New Orleans itinerary, cruisers can visit Vicksburg, Mississippi, where the National Military Park commemorates the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg in 1863. In Louisiana's capital, Baton Rouge, a guided excursion explores critical locations in the Civil War's Battle of Baton Rouge and Port Hudson.

Explore unique boutiques, antique shops, a fully restored courthouse, and Tunica Veterans Memorial at Rivergate Park. Here, you can enjoy the kind of southern hospitality you thought only existed in storybooks. During the Civil War, the struggle to control Vicksburg proved to be a major turning point. With no Civil War fighting here, Natchez still features hundreds of antebellum homes and buildings. Each of these architectural treasures has its own story to tell, creating a charming downtown that embodies the essence of southern charm and hospitality. Meaning “red stick,” Baton Rouge’s 1699 French name references an ancient geographical marker and reflects the city’s long history.

Learn about this idyllic town’s rich past and revel in its natural beauty, led by our engaging local guides. Explore the charming downtown, located only two blocks from our dock, where you peruse local boutiques, coffee shops, and eateries. Or relax on the sun deck or private balcony and enjoy the passing landscapes as we make our way along the Mississippi River from Hannibal to Muscatine. In Natchez, grand homes sparkle like jewels, adorning the bluffs that tower above the river. Since 1716, when the French first built a fort here among the Natchez Indians, the town has grown to boast elaborate mansions built by planters in the 1800s to flaunt their wealth. Later, experience the opulence and natural wonder of the Oak Alley estate with its breathtaking parallel row of 28 ancient and massive live oak trees.

Start planning your trip by reading our Baja Mexico cruise guides written by our expert crew. As seasoned veterans of the region, let us explain how to choose the right Baja peninsula cruise for you, which seasons are the best to visit and more. On a Baja California cruise, discover tales from ancient civilizations when you visit San Jose Del Cabo, just a short drive from Cabo San Lucas. Between the 18th-century architecture and the Spanish colonial character, let the preserved charm of this rural town transport you to Mexico’s past. Hear stories from locals, and learn city secrets from expert guides. Taste, see and meet true Mexican heritage on a Baja California cruise with Princess. In Loreto, stroll down the cobbled streets decorated with multi-colored homes, shops and museums. Sample Mexican seafood — like “chocolate” clams cooked over rocks — while sipping on spicy margaritas.

Mexico Cruises Onboard Experience

From the colonial town of Loreto to the beaches of Puerto Vallarta, experience Mexico’s best on a Sea of Cortez cruise with Princess®. Cruise to Baja Mexico for some south-of-the-border flavor with a coastal twist. Don’t be confused — the Baja California peninsula is actually in Mexico, and cruises to Mexico are a great way to explore this area. Getting there’s a snap, because it’s just south of California (California, USA, that is) and it’s all just a short trip when you cruise from Los Angeles. While the region features a geography not unlike SoCal, it’s a different world… one that attracts American expats, and especially retirees, who call coastal resort towns like Ensenada their home.

Or snorkel through the 100-mile Loreto National Marine Park for a chance to see some of the 800 species of fish that swim through the waters. Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo is surrounded by clear waters and sun-kissed beaches. As one of the world’s premier resort destinations, it’s the perfect place to relax, recharge and reawaken your passion for adventure. On a Mexico cruise, tour Todos Santos and enjoy lunch at the Hotel California. Or sail on a catamaran to Lover’s Beach, and snap a photo in front of El Arco on your way.

Please select your stateroom or suite type and room category from the available options. Though tamales are popular throughout central and south America, the ones you’ll find along Mexico’s western coast are unique. These are typically stuffed with pork (called guemes tamales) or chicken (tamales fajados de pollo) along with simmered olives and raisins. A staple of the Sonoran cuisine popular in northern Mexico, machaca guisada is a stew that spotlights spiced beef or donkey.

What’s more, you’ll have just as much to look forward to in between shoreside discoveries as you sail onboard the Amplified fleet-favorite, Navigator of the Seas®. A Mexican Riviera cruise is the perfect getaway for all kinds of travelers. Cruise from Los Angeles and explore some of the region’s must-visit destinations, like Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta.

Offer valid on new bookings only, subject to availability and may not be combined with other offers. Our naturalist guide Carlos did a fabulous job introducing us to the flora and fauna of Baja. He is very knowledgeable and interesting, and has a great sense of humor. He patiently answered all of our questions, told us great stories and helped the group in so many ways. He is kind, warm and engaging, with years of experience (kayak guide, snorkeling/diving expert, wildlife specialist, safety/first aid, etc.). Captain Bill and his crew were exemplary in all ways, and did their utmost to ensure complete passenger satisfaction on all levels.

Here, your meal is an event unto itself, a celebration of fine dining and a triumph of flavor. Our Princess fleet includes ships that offer a multitude of amenities and feature the innovative MedallionClass® experience. From a balcony stateroom, take in the sights and sounds of the colorful cultures ashore before enjoying the “sabor” of local cuisine in one of our many eateries during your Sea of Cortez cruise. End the day along the sea, strolling the coast-hugging Malecon promenade as the sun sets into the Pacific Ocean.

At New York Pizza, choose from a variety of scrumptious, 9-inch, thin-crust pies. Named for New York’s famed five boroughs, our signature pizzas are made to order and topped with only the finest ingredients. Enjoy your pizza by day while overlooking the Lido pool, and into the night. This venue is New York Deli & Pizza on Koningsdam, Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam, offering made-to-order deli sandwiches in addition to pizza.

Soak in the culture and history of Ensenada, a resort town with lovely beaches and cosmopolitan flair. Visit the Riviera Center, a former hotel and casino with beautiful architecture and a charming garden. Dive into the ocean near Todos Santos Island, where you can witness stunning underwater formations. Explore the Guadalupe Valley while on an off-road adventure or during a bucolic stroll through its vineyards. Speaking of beaches, there's a reason most of the best Baja Mexico cruises sail all the way to Puerto Vallarta. There are simply few better places to hit the sand and surf along the Mexican Riviera.

Or stroll along the seafront Malecon boardwalk – the city’s premier shopping destination — where mementos, margaritas and Mexican buffets await. While Loreto is known for its cliff-top vistas and sparkling beaches, there’s more to the city than just its scenery. On a Sea of Cortez cruise, visit the missions that give the city its rich history — like Mission San Javier and Mission of Our Lady of Loreto.

Our relaxing café with panoramic views is your home for handcrafted espresso drinks during the day and refreshing cocktails in the evening. Experience the country’s unique character the second you step on the ship with traditional Mexican cuisine, events and activities. On a Sea of Cortez cruise with Princess, discover culture around every corner. Mazatlan is home to captivating coastal scenes, but this is one of the first stops on your trip where you'll see truly impressive historical architecture. Take a walking tour to get a guided explanation of the Centro Historico along the Old Mazatlan walk.

You can take a shorter cruise to Ensenada or Cabo San Lucas, or extend your trip and continue south to Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. No matter how far you go or how deep you dig, here are the best ways to ensure you enjoy your time on land as much as you relish the luxurious environment on the ship.
